It’s probably something to do with the supposed Nazi Occult Research from the thirty’s and fourty’s. Bullet Proof Monk for part of the reference, somewhat. Although that is German and Chinese I suppose… Take your pick I guess.

Interesting question. For me personally it’s research on Hitler and his interest in the occult. For Americans and Japanese in general? I’d guess Indiana Jones (which goes back to the first thing, lol).
It was more Himmler than Hitler though. And knowledge about this particular aspect wasn’t widely known until suddenly appearing in comics and movies. You really think that those (Indiana Jones, Hellboy and the like) started this trend?
